The book, like the exhibition, chronicles the distinct phases of Richert's nearly 50-year career, tracing out the metaphysical thread that connects them and continues to drive Richert's practice. That thread--the exploration and visualization of n-dimensionality, or hyperspace--not only elucidates Richert's often enigmatic paintings but also links his oeuvre to the work of early 20th-century avant-gardists whose engagement with hyperspace philosophy was a pivotal modernist project (Braque, Duchamp, Ernst, Malevich, Mondrian, Van Doesburg and, later, Buckminster Fuller). For Richert the visual manifestation of dimensions beyond the three with which we are familiar is not solely a geometrical or philosophical problem, but the pursuit of an idealistic, even utopic, reality. For Richert, art is the tool by which this project can be realized.

MCA Denver Exclusive! These works were created by Moran placing a sheet of Japanese Gampi paper on a piano and then using saturated pigment to track the “attack” of his fingers upon the keys. The results are vibrant traces of a performance that build upon his recurring quest to explore the “residues” of music-making. The color blue, which dominates many of these works on paper, alludes to the rich migratory history of Blues music, the sentiment of melancholy found in “blue notes,” and the diaspora of traditions brought to the United States from the African continent (in North Africa, for example, blue is associated with healing). The intensity of the Black Lives Matter protests from the last year further informs these works, as the blue marks at times resemble marchers moving in formation across the page. The marks also represent the how the musical phrases in a solo gather.

These works on paper will be complemented by the presentation of Moran’s STAGED: Three Deuces, 2015. This Beaux-Arts style flatiron building opened on Welton Street in 1912 as the Baxter Hotel and was renamed the Rossonian after its manager A.W.L. Ross in 1929. The club hosted jazz luminaries such as Count Basie, Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington (who spent an entire summer there), Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday, and launched the career of important Denver-based musicians including bassist Charles Burrell and pianist Charlotte Cowens. The Rossonian Hotel offered accommodations for Black performers at a time when they were prevented from staying in hotels downtown. Following the lifting of segregationist housing covenants in the 1960s, residents began to move away from Five Points, which led to the hotel’s decline and multiple changes in its ownership. The building has been largely inactive since the late 1980s, though it has functioned intermittently as a studio space for artists and is currently scheduled for redevelopment.

Photograph by Tom Noel, 1999

Courtesy the The Denver Public Library, Special Collections.

El Chapultepec: The history of El Chapultepec began after the ratification of the 21st amendment, officially repealing prohibition in the United States. The piece over all captures my style as an artist, which is showing the vibe of the alternative black kid by designing unique designs."

The Call For Artists is an annual initiative to spotlight and give platform to underrepresented and developing artists in our community.

Winning artists receive compensation for their design as well as commission from t-shirt sales.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1743/7943/products/1_a63157a4-f2c0-44e6-9e8e-a2dc83978801.jpg?v=1677616015
pattern-glasses
Pattern Glasses

Dusen Dusen is known for their bold original textiles to both wear and live among. Each collection is developed and inspired by fine art, commercial and naïve design, as well as the brain's reaction to color, movement, and contrast. Infants are wrapped in cradleboards, used by many Native American people, to help ease an infant’s lack of bodily control to create a space of peacefulness. As Navajos grow up, children are taught to keep their hair clean and tied back. This provides clarity of mind and positive intention as one goes through life. Throughout Navajo culture, there are many other ways this act of binding provides a way of being in the world. Translating this technique and Navajo mark making, as a method of decolonization of art, are the foundation of Tsouhlarakis’ current practice.

ISBN: 978-0-916537-21-0

Dimensions: 8.5x11"

Page count: 66

Retail price: $25

Exclusive and limited edition button pins made and designed by Tomashi Jackson for her exhibition, Tomashi Jackson: Across the Universe, on view now at MCA Denver!

Each pin features images that inspired much of the artists own work. It’s an everyday act—but just a century ago, eating food that had been refrigerated was cause for both fear and excitement. The introduction of artificial refrigeration overturned millennia of dietary history, launching a new chapter in human nutrition. We could now overcome not just rot, but seasonality and geography. Today, nearly three-quarters of everything on the average American plate is processed, shipped, stored, and sold under refrigeration. It’s impossible to make sense of our food system without understanding the all-but-invisible network of thermal control that underpins it. Twilley’s eye-opening book is the first to reveal the transformative impact refrigeration has had on our health and our guts; our farms, tables, kitchens, and cities; global economics and politics; and even our environment.

In the developed world, we’ve reaped the benefits of refrigeration for more than a century, but the costs are catching up with us. We’ve eroded our connection to our food and redefined what “fresh” means. More important, refrigeration is one of the leading contributors to climate change. As the developing world races to build a US-style cold chain, Twilley asks: Can we reduce our dependence on refrigeration? Should we?
